Paralyzed by a war wound, a captain depends completely on his wife, who nearly leaves him for a kind younger man she meets while peddling in the street to keep the family fed during their evacuation. She chooses to stay, and the two go on to open a shelter for war widows, a project that nearly collapses along with her own will to live after their daughter is killed in an accident.
