춘향전(1961) / The Love Story of Chun-hyang ( Chun-hyang Jeon )

Two studios raced to film Korea's best-known folk romance in 1961, and this is the version that lost the box office: a gisaeng's daughter secretly weds a magistrate's son, then takes a beating and prison rather than serve the corrupt official who replaces him. Hong Seong-ki shot it in colour CinemaScope with his wife Kim Jee-mi as Chun-hyang, and it survives as the record of a rivalry that split the Korean industry in two.
