두만강아 잘 있거라(1962) / Farewell Duman River ( Dumangang-a Jal Itgeora )

Student fighters blow up Japanese installations and run for Manchuria across the frozen Duman River, leaving parents and lovers behind to face the reprisals. Im Kwon-taek's first film as director is an early Manchurian Western, and its closing gun battle fought on skis across open snow is still the reason to sit down with it.
