A village schoolteacher comes back from the front disabled, learns his wife has died and his small daughter has been waiting, and is promptly elected chairman of a collective farm with almost nothing left to farm. Nikolai Gubenko directs from a Vasily Shukshin script that treats rebuilding a ruined village as the harder half of the war.
