Andrei Sokolov leaves his family to drive trucks at the front in 1942, is wounded, captured, and survives an interrogation in which one wrong answer means a bullet. He comes home to nothing, wife and daughters killed by a bomb and his son shot on the final morning of the war, and takes in an orphaned boy rather than give up.
