Yuriko, a Japanese ballet student invited to train at the Bolshoi, builds a life and a love in Moscow before a leukaemia diagnosis traced to her mother's exposure at Hiroshima cuts the season short. Alexander Mitta's Soviet-Japanese co-production hands the whole film to Komaki Kurihara and she carries it.
